Rooftop Fish Farm - AutoPot™ Aquaponics
There are three separate sections within the Aquaculture set up at the IRIS-AutoPot™ Rooftop project.

1. The Grow Out Table Fish Section
2. The Feeder Fish Section (brood and fry)
3. The Aquatic Food Plant Section.

Due to the constraints of space and weight loading on the building structure, we are limited to a maximum of 100 x 3,000 litre fish tanks with a total capacity of 300,000 litres.

1. Grow Out Table Fish Section - Species currently in culture - Approximately 8,000 fish (3inch fingerlings to plate size) in 40 tanks x 3,000 litres each.

  1. Title 1
Kelah Empurau - A really expensive fish which is fetching up to $1,000 ringgit per kilo in Malaysia for the strain that is found in Sarawak rivers. It has a unique flavour supposedly coming from its natural diet - a fruit called engkabang (winged fruits) which is found in abundance along the river banks in its native habitat.

2. Feeder Fish Section - Species cultured

30 (2,500L) outdoor Brood tanks for the production of eggs and fry to be transferred to feeder tanks. The aim is to determine the logistics and feasbibility of producing own live feed for the table fish to reduce reliance on imported fish meals. As shown in the water-flow chart for our AutoPot™ Aquaponics set up, these tanks will be receiving water which has gone through a number of grow out tanks. Newly hatched fry are raised in the feeder tanks for one to two months before been fed to some of our high value carnivorous fish eg. Soon Hock.

3. Duckweed Section - Lemna

We have 10 x 1,000L shallow trays for the production of Duckweed - Lemna species which is growing with water that had gone through a series of fish tanks. We produced enough Duckweed to feed 5,000 Jade Perch (averaged size 120mm) and few hundred Red tilapia and Kelah. Half of the tanks are harvested and fed to the fish daily. With the constant hot temperatures, the Duckweed just multiply unbelievably fast - doubling its growth (in quantity) every other day. The crude protein content is around 40%. We also stock the tanks with yabbies,

Water Flow Chart

AutoPot™ Aquaponics differs from conventional aquaponics in many ways.  The major difference is its versatility with the use of water. We have a number of large commercial farms been set up similar to the water-flow
chart as shown below.
